Do you want to get your wisdom teeth removed to be a fun and painless experience? Well, in reality, it is! Removing your wisdom teeth can seem like a scary experience, but in this blog, we will break down everything you need to know to feel comfortable about your appointment. 85% of people get their wisdom teeth removed in their lifetime. For some people, it's a routine procedure, and for some, it is essential to their dental health. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds or as people make it out to be. Here are a few ways to prep you for your visit to make this as smooth as possible;
What to Expect When Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Removed
What Should You Expect When Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
- Make sure you arrive early, about 45 minutes before your appointment
- Don't eat anything after 11:59 pm on the day before your visit
- Don't drink any liquids up to 2 hours before your event. Having anything in your stomach during anesthesia can be very dangerous
- Make sure you have a ride and do not drive yourself because the medication that will be administered to you will make you very sleepy, and you don't want to fall asleep while driving, on the bus, or in an Uber on your way home
The Day of the Appointment
When you get to the dentist's office, you'll start by signing some paperwork and filling out some forms that give consent to your dentist to remove your wisdom teeth.
You'll then be shown some instructions on how to maintain your dental health after getting your wisdom teeth pulled so that it heals as quickly as possible.
You might wait around for about 15-30 minutes after you finish this paperwork. Before your operation, you can ask any questions you may have to make you feel more comfortable about the operation.
The Operation
After the Operation
After this exciting procedure, your dentist will set you up in the chair, put ice on your teeth, and gauze in your mouth. They'll go over some paperwork before letting you go about your dental health and how to take the medication you're given to help your mouth heal properly.
- You will have gauze stuck in your mouth because your mouth will be bleeding a little. Bite down on the gauze until you get home, then take it out and throw it away.
- Ensure you eat something soft for the next few days, like mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and soup.
- Don't use straws when you're drinking liquids because it can slow the healing process inside your mouth due to the pressure that straws create when sucking liquids into your mouth.
- Every once in a while, there may be a little blood in your mouth or around your teeth because your mouth hasn't healed from the operation yet. Put some gauze back in your mouth for about 20 minutes and it should stop.
- Rinse your mouth with salt water after eating to prevent food from getting stuck where your tooth used to be and causing an infection that could be detrimental to your dental health.
- When brushing your teeth, avoid going too far back with your toothbrush to where your tooth got pulled so that you don't break the sutures the surgeon put in to help close the new hole in your mouth.
- After one week, you can go back to your dentist, and they will use a syringe to squirt saltwater in the hole where your tooth was and clean out any excess food to prevent infection.
- There is going to be some pain and swelling for about 2-3 days after. When the swelling happens, put some ice on it once an hour for about 20 minutes at a time until the swelling goes down. Sleep with 2 or three pillows at night to keep your head above your heart to keep the swelling from getting worse.
- Make sure to take your medicine regularly to keep the pain at bay. If it's been a week and there is still pain and swelling, call your dentist immediately.
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for about a week until you've fully healed.
